I never thought I would use the word “subtle” in the same sentence as “Pete Clifton” (editor of the BBC News website). (Some might argue the use of the word genius is equally surprising, but I couldn’t possibly comment)
But check out this quote the latest edition of Pete’s column, in which he discusses the place of opinion pieces on the otherwise facts-only BBC News website:
“The place that opinion pieces have on the site is a tricky one. Readers respect us for our impartiality and balance, but does that mean we should never carry more strident views?
We won’t be foaming at the mouth and ranting just yet, because that would fox our audience.”
Genius.
