O’Reilly are now running their own FOAF (Friend Of A Friend)-type social network website – O’Reilly Connections.
Despite appearing to be another “invitation only” affair, it looks like anyone can join if they register for an O’Reilly Login. (Feel free to add me as ‘a connection’, so I can really become a social network whore).
To be fair, it is orientated about business networking and identifying skill sets (rather than the “you know Jane via your friend Christine, so you could go ask her on a date” rubbish that Friendster was kind of all about).
Yes, it’s business (particularly new media/internet) rather than “open to anyone”. Yes, it’s O’Reilly (whose conferences are the real-world manifestations of FOAF-gaining oppotunities) rather than some previously unknown entity who you don’t know what they will do with the network data.
But I stil can’t help but think it’s another Orkut, I mean Friendster, sorry I mean LinkedIn, no wait…
